INTERESTING COMPETITIONS. The members of the Municipal Silver Band last night held a most enjoyable and interesting function in Murray's HalL The function took. the. form, of a competition for soloists, duet and quartette parties, from the ranks, of the band. Theer were two grade's, junior and senior players, and competition was keen in both. Mr Harold Taylor, who very ably filled the position of judge, finally complimented the performers on the improvement made since tho last competition some months ago, and in his criticism gave some very good adviec to the men. Mr Taylor gave his decisions as follows: — Junior grade.—Allen Gardner 1, B. E. Church^. Senior grade. —E. Joyce 1, J. Stalker 2. Duot parties.—F. Harrington and • —. Cook 1. Quartette parties.—Bandmaster Hatton's party 1. The points prize, a handsome silver cup donated by Bandsman Valpy, went to Mr E. Joyce. The attendance medal, which was closely contested for by many, went to Mr A. S. Broadribb, by two points only. At the conclusion of the prize presentations, Conductor Denne, on behalf of the band, in a few well-chosen words, presented Mr Taylor with a handsome pipe in appreciation of his services as judge of these competitions. Mr Taylor suitably replied, and trusted that the band would continue holding such func. tions, as they were certainly the means of encouraging home practice, which made for proficiency. Shortly after nine o'clock the band, together with their lady friends and immediate relatives; adjourned for supper. The trophies for competition were generously donated by the following:— Mr G. R. Sykcs, M.P., Dr. Maunsell, Mr T. G. Hoar, Mr Henderson, Mr T. C. Denne, Messrs Chas. Begg*and Co., and the points prize by Mr P. Valpy.
