We regret to learn that One of Masterton's old settlers, Mr S. Kingdom, is laid up with au attack of inflammation of the luugs.

The Baroness Clifton, of Leighton Bromsvvold, is England's youngest peeress. She is the only child of the late earl of Darnley, and ih just eight years old.

The Premier left Wellington for Taihapo this morning to opentho now post and telegraph office there. In the evening he will be entertained at a banquet by the local Chamber of Commerce. To-morrow lie will open the new bridge over the Huangarua, Martinborough.

The most remarkable case of sisters marrying men who became famous is to be found iv the daughters of the Rev. George Maodonald, a Wesleyan minister. One became the wife of Sir Edward Burne-Jones, the great paintor ; another is the wife of Sir Edward Poynter, president of the Royal Academy; and a third is the wife of Mr J. Lookwood Kipling, C.1.E., and mother of Mr Rudyard Kipling.

Intimation was received by Mr G. Cullou, on the literary staff of the Wairarapa Daily Times, last evening, that he had been successful iv the first section examination for the law j)rofossional subjects. Mr Oullen today received many hearty congratulations, verbally aud by telegram, on the success attained by him at the recent examination. Mr B. J. Dolan, who coached Mr Oullen, also tutored Mr O'Learv for some time.

The death occurred at Wodonga, Victoria of Mr William Huon. almost the last of the pioneers of the Southern Riverina. He was the grandson of Gabriel de Uxilleau, a French Royalist of noble birth, who fled from his country, and lauded in Australia witii .Captain John McArthur in 1786. The sons of this refugee were the first men to take up land on the Victorian side of the Murray. Mr Huon's widow is a niece of Hamilton Hume, the first explorer of the Upper Murray.

News has been received from Ireland of the death of Mrs P. K. M'Namara, sister of the late Very Rev. Dean Mahoney, of Nelson, New Zealand. She passed away after a brief illness on Suuday, 22nd September, at her residence in Herbertstown, County Limerick. Th 6 Revs. Father Devoy and Hicksou, of Wellington, New Zealand, who are at present in Europe, called to see her the day before she died. She chatted pleasantly with them for an hour or so, and was delighted to hear them speak of her two sous, who are at present iv New Zealand. The funeral procession, which left the parish church after a requiem mass had been celebrated, was the largest ever seen in the district. The deceased lady, who was much esteemed, leaves a husband, five sous aud three daughters.
