A NOTED FOOTBALLER.

DEATH OF MR ALF. BAYLY,

Regret will be felt by sportsmen throughout Australasia (says the Post) at the uutimoly oud of a brilliant athlete ami a popular personality. From his teeus until the attainment of his third decade Alt'. Bayly was in tlio forefront of all representative Rugby football, and his figure was almost "as well-known in Svduey and Brisbane as it was in the chief centres of New Zealand. He represented New Zoaland on several occasions, and on several occasions captained the "All-Blacks." He was the fourth sou of the late Mr Thomas Bayly, a big laudowuer in Taranaki, who was identified with several local bodies. All the sous were athletes of eminence. There are Fred. Bayly (a well-known forward), George (a three-quarter, who played for Wellington witli a touring team some years ago), Harry (three-quarter), Alt',, (any position, aud winner of a prizo given iv Australia for the best all-round man in 1893), Charlie (who played at half against Stoddart's team, aud represented Tarauaki on several occasions), Walter "(wing forward, aud ex-New Zealaud aud Tarauaki representative), Frank (ex-Tara-naki aud Poverty Bay representative), "Lar" (a good club man, and who also, we believe, once secured his representative cap), and Ernest (full back and ex-Taranaki representative). Alt'. Bayly was educated at New Plymouth High School. Early in his caraer he captained the Cliftou Club, aud later the Mangauui (which included the district between Stratford aud Midhirst). He was captaiu of the team which represented Tarauaki in their first match against Stoddart's Britishers, Hampton—originally selected—having beeu injured in a practice match. After the season iv which Arm it met with his fatal accideut, Alf. Bayly played only once—against Waugauui—and he then had the misfortune to break his leg through a collision with another player.

All the Baylys went in for cricket, George and Fred, being particularly prominent. These two—also Alt'., Harry and Walter—all shaped finely on the running track. Alf. was a prominent member of the Stratford Jockey Club, and chairman of committee of the Tarauaki Rugby Union for some years. He also took part in local politics. A little time back he went to reside in the Wanganui district, where his death occurred.
