KOPUARANGA NOTES.
(Special to Daily Times.)
The damage done by the heavy flood to the properties along the Rumahanga can now be seen, and is not so heavy as at first feared. The river has gong back to its former channel and has deposited shingle on only half an acre of pasture. The fences are all down and a few rows of potatoes and oats washed out of the ground, but with a little labour all the mischief will be repaired.
Several persons hereabouts created a mild scare among dairy farmers by spreading the report that the storekeepers in town were retusing to take the bacon cured at bacon factories, because the animals had not been killed at the abattoirs and they would commit a breach of the law by selling the meat. If this had been true, a serious blow would have been given to the bacon industry, and despite the improbability of the story it was believed by some until enquiry along the telephone gave them the information that the restriction was imposed only on pork.
The warm rain of Monday and Tuesday has had a most beneficial effect on both grass and crops. In fact, although we have had many showers lately, not one has made the farmers so well satisfied. The daily returns at the creamery show the supply has reached nearly 800 gallons, but the tests are still low.
Mr J. Dineen, Truant Officer, visited the school on Wednesday, and threatened to take action against two of the parents unless their children attended the number of times required.
