The statistics for 1905 show that the population increased by .'51,500 on the preceding year, of which 24,500 were by excess of births over deaths. The birth-rate is equivalent to 2C.72 per thousand in the metropolitan area. The birth-rate is the highest for ten years. The death-rate is 13 per thousand, which is five per cent, below the mean average for the last ten years. The deaths from phthisis are the lowest for live years, while the mortality from cancor is steadily increasing, the rate being twelve per million higher than, the quinquennial average.
