THE TERAWHITI REEFS.

The following report oil the Terawhiti reefs has been forwarded to the Minister of Mines by Mr W. Fox, whose name has become famous in connection with • the gold discoveries in Otago:—Sir,—l have the honor to report toynu that upon my arrival on the top of the hill of the Golden Crown claim, at Terawhiti, most of the visitors were coming back. 1 went down the shaft about 20ft and got some stone from the reef running east and west, The reef is about 16 or. 18 inches wide. I put the stone aside. I went down a stope 15 feet and took some stone, which 1 left aside. I went, into a drive' running north-west, where they were sinking a new stope, and took some stone from the drive ■near there. I then re- j turned to the top, and crushed each * sample separately, and found them all ' gold-bearing, and should run at the rate . of 2oz to 2ioz to the ton. i then went into a tunnel wliich runs through the hill, and saw the old workings. 1 got some stone from .there, which I'foun.d to be gold-bearing. On the north-west end of the tunnel there is a large blow of stone on the surface, which I think is a turnover from a large reef. 1 also got a rubble on the western side, at the mouth of the tunnel, which there gold in. 1 also visited the Wealth of Nations and the Welcome. The latter claim lias a good tunnel running north and south to catch a small reef running east and west from the western side of the mountain. The slate in those claims looks gold-bearing. In my opinion it would be advisable on the part of the shareholders ■ in this district to get a boring machine and sink 300 or 400 ft on the western side near to the sea level, as the Terawhiti hills have bwit of volcanic eruption and very much shaken, and by boring on a lower level 1 think the country is more solid to hole' reefs,—l have, &c.', William Fox.
