CRICKET.

East Ruamahanoa v Pihautea,

The above match. cam,e off aj; My Phillips' 3,tatJQii, Dry River, last Monday, The weather was everything that could be wished for, and, 'thanks to Mr Phillips, there was every convenience for cricketers and spectators, Wo were pleased to see a large number of the fair sex present, whose presence always adds greatly to the pleasure of these events. There was a little delay m starting, owing to some of Mr Phillips' team being absont, and their places were eventually filled by emergency men, It is but fair to state here, that !wd tho whole of the team played that wore first ohosen to represent East Ruamahanga the result would in all probability havebeenainuchclosercontestedone. The strong points in the Bidwilliau team was undoubtedly the bowling. The careful batting of J, 0. Bidwill, Coe, and C, R, Bidwill, oyidently proved very tiresome to the Phjlijpites., for they frequently changed' bowlers to, try to displace them, but did not sucoocl till they had added 10,19, and 13, respectively to the score, In fieldin", tl\o Bidwillians were rather weak, lyjth tl\q exception of the wicket keeper, Duffy, who proved that he was the right man in the right place. The fielding on the Philiipites' side, was excellent, and the wicket keeping of Stokes was much admired; as. wis also the neat bowling of F. Ifaunsell; but the paae was hardly fast enough, to be very effective, especially as the Pilmtea team had been used to swift bowling when practising together. The Philiipites won the toss, and elected to go in first, and suceeded in getting 62 runs before they were disposed of. - The teams and visitors then adjourned to the homestead, where an excellent dinner was laid out, and full justice was done to the good things provided. After tho inner man had been satisfied, Mr 0, Phillips proposed the of the visiting team, After speaking in eugolistic tonus of tho interest the late Mr 0, R. Bidwill, sen, had taken, in. the game, he congratulated his sons for following their father's good example, and said these friendly matches oould not help being fraught with much good by creating a good feeling between employers and employees, and. concluded by saying that ho hoped other stations would take the matter up,

Mr W. E! Bidwill (Captain of the Pihautea team) in rising to respond, said he hartily reciprocated the remark of the previous speaker that the good feeling then existing between all parties should continue, and referred at some length to the course of events since thoy met last year. 5c would ask thorn to drink the health of Mr'Phillips' team. Mr E. Martin proposed tho ladies in his usually happy way. Shortly afterwards a move was made towards tho cricket field, the Bidwill's taking tho bat, and they succeeded in making 100 runs in the innings, thus winning by 44 runs to spare. Messrs Cuff and Bawson were the umpires for East Buamahanga and Pihautea respectively, and thoir decisions gave every satisfaction, Appended are the respective scores:—
