THE CONFERENCE.
AT WASHINGTON. BRITAIN’S DELEGATES VEXED. Per Press Association—Copyright. NEW YORK, August 7. It is authoritatively learned that Mr Lloyd George and the Dominion Prime Ministers are vexed over the United States’ refusal to consider an understanding between Britain, Japan, and America, to take the place of the Japanese Alliance. Britain suggested a conference of the three Powers preliminary to the Washington meeting in order to reach such an understanding. Mr Hughes and Mr Harding, remembering the fate of tine Versailles Treaty and the Franoo-American defence agreement, in the Senate vetoed the suggestion, -feeling certain, that Congress would not accept it. It is now regarded as certain, however, that the proposals will be broached when the Wasiiington conference assembles in November 11.
