CADET TRAINING.

SPORTS BRANCHES. The programme for the training of Senior Cadets includes recreation as well as physical and military training, when recreation can be made to servo either kind of training. • Boxing is one form of physical recreation that has been included in the programme. The Christchurch Garrison Sports Association has arranged to hold a series of boxing competitions among Senior Cadets this week, and seme of the Timaru boys will be competitors. These and others have ’oeen training hard for the competitions, and last Saturday evening a try-out display was hold in the drill hall. The competitors showed great keenness, and some of them no little skill. There* were eight bouts, between about the same number of Cadets, and tho contests Were quite interesting. Four or five of the best boxers will take part in. the Christchurch display. Football is another game suitable for Cadets, and falling in with the governing idea of Cadet training. It has therefore been arranged, on the suggestion of Captain Parkinson, to hold a Rugby football tournament between tho Companies in South Canterbury. Tho two Timaru Companies, 43 and 44, being numerically large/ will ench furnish two teams, and the other four Companies one team each. The. High School Cadets are barred, as they get so much practice. It is not proposed to provide any trophies, 1 but half tram fare will bo refunded to teams that travel, from the Area maintenance grant. If possible outside referees will 'oe obtained, and. the Referees’ Association will bo requested to lend their assistance. The competitions are to begin on the. 27th inst. with a-lbatch Faillie v. Pleasant Point at Point. The winner of this game then takes part in the general first round, on the 27th inst., when tho draw brings tho following teams into opposition:—Winner F. v. P.P. v. 438 at Timaru, Waimate v, 44A at Waimate, Temuka v. Geraldine at Temuka, 448 v. 43A at Timaru. The second round, wilt follow at a later date, at places that will cause the minimum of travelling. These contests should be interesting to the sporting public as well as to the Cadets, and as most or all of the playera will have had football at the primary schools, good games should be the rule.
