NAVAL VETERAN’S DEATH AT GLENAVY.

ON THE EVE OP TRAFALGAR DAY. On Thursday last travellers on the Main South Road might have wondered why the Glenavy School flag was flying half-mast. The Waitaki Boys’ High School Band and their Rector, who were eh route for Waimate to give an illustrated lecture on the English Nation and Sea Power, wondered. It appears that the half-masted strip of bunting signified the mourning of the Glenavy community over the death of one of the most esteemed of their number. Mr Edward Butt had passed away early that morning. He was born in Norfolk, England, In 3847. At the age of 11 years he joined the navy, and during a penod of 20 years saw aciiva service in the Abvs inian War, on the west c ast of Africa, and the China stations; also with the Mediterranean and Channel fleets. He was serving on the Valorous in company with the turret-ship Caplaii when the latter foundered in 1870. off Cape Finnisterre, losing 506 men. Whilst serving on the Warrior he viisted Iceland, takin ; active part i i settling the dispute between the Shetland and N irwegian fiahermm. Mr Butt came to New Zealand in the ship Waipa in 1875, and to Glenavy 27 years ago, as an enuloyee of the Railway Department. He retired on superannuation four years ago, and has since resided at Glenavy. Sjjko lime ago Waimate people had an opportunity of inspecting some of the late Mr Butt's needlewfrk. As a sailor he had spent some time in Japsnese water, and learned the art of embossed thread figure working on silk. A very large design “Flags of All Nations,” framed in gold, was on view in Mr R. H. White’s window some twelve months ago. This and other examples of his hand-work gained premier awards at various exhibitions. Mr Butt leaves a widow, two daughters, and two sons to mourn his loss. One son and three daughters had predeceased him. Mr Butt was a member of the Masonic and Druidic orders, and they fire notified of the funeral, which will take place to-morrow.
