August 11. 1 In the Legislative Assembly, the Treasurer lias given notice of motion for leave to bring in a Bill to amend the Northern Territory Act. He proposes to enlarge the time witlriu which selections may be made, to increase the area allowed to each holder of a land-order, and ;my land-order holder refusing to agree to these conditions to have his money returned to him. The Court lias decided that the disputed returns in the election of Messrs I heriton and, Rogers, for the electoral district of Mount Barker, are null and void, on the ground of the improper discharge of his duties by the returning officer at Milang. The new election mil. take place as sooa as possible. Several influential gentlemen connected with the pastoral interest are taking up the question of the establishment of a Bushman's Home in Adelaide, to be conducted in the same way and on the same principle as a Sailors' Home. The annual report of the South Australian Insurance Company is of a very favorable character, and a dividend of ten per cent: has been declared. There is great excitement about Scots' ■-Cjfeek silver mine, and the publication of the last assay has 1 led to considerable ; .speculation. Shares have changed hands at very liigli figures. In the Legislative Assembly, the debate on the abolition of the Court of Appeals has been adjourned, and the motion is lik«-ly to meet with strong opposition. An able paper on education was read at the Philosophical Society, by Mr Hoskins, and the subject is now attracting much attention. Mr Furniss, of the well-known firm of Messrs. Johnston and Furniss, wine and spirit merchants, died this afternoon from disease of the heart. August 13. > Messrs Solomon and Co offered at auction to day the cargo of Mauritius sugars ex Sarah, and sold the whole of it at prices equivalent to the rates obtained at the late public sales. All the household furniture aud effects of the late W. W. Anderson, Esq., solicitor, were disposed of by public auction today. A seloct committee of the Assembly has been appointed to report upon the state of the education question in the colony. The English mail per branch steamer Alexandra will close here at noon, on Monday next. Messrs Lenton aud Smith's Japanese troupe continues to draw large houses at the Jioyal. August 14. In the Legislative Assembly there has been an animated and somewhat acrimonious debate on the land revenue question. TLe Government introduced a motion to amend the Sutherland Act, for the appropriation of the proceeds of the land sales, upon which an amendment was moved to repeal the Act altogether. Both the motion and amcudment were negatived, tho former by the casting vole of the Speaker. Levi's Wharf, which had been withdrawn at an auction sale on Wednesday, has been purchased by Messrs Lcvi and Co, at the reserved price, viz., J3L4,300.« The cargo of sugar ex Margarctta has been offered by auction, and about 100 tons sold, at the following rates : — Fine ration, £26 ]0s; fine brown, £28 to £28 12s 6d; bright yellow, £30 5s to £32 17s 6d ; brewing crystals. £34 to £35 ; low to good white, £35 to £36. The corn market remains perfectly quiet. Arrived. — Coorong, s.s., from Melbourne. August 15. The report of the JVational Marine Insurance Company is of a very favorable character. The profits on the half-year amount to £30,000. Of this amount £6250 lias been passed to Ihe capital account, £3100 placed to the reserve limd, and a dividend at tho rate of 10 per cent, declared on the amount of paid-up capital. Aug. 18. The debate on the Northern territory resolutions has been adjourned. From the tone of the speakers, it is probable that resolutions will be passed compelling tho survey of the land without any repayment of- moneys. An amendment conveying a censure on tho Government has been negatived, the principal leaders of Opposition deprecating its being made a party question. There was a heavy storm of wind and hail last night, and the weather to-day is very squally. The eclipse of .the sun was seen distinctly to-day. It is slated that Mr Dixon retires from the office of inspector of the Bank of South Australia.

The tidal wave reported from Sydney was also distinctly noticed in the G-ulf licre, but ;hc disturbance of the ordinary tides was slightly compared with that on tho coast of New youth "Wales.

The cargo of Baltic timber, ex Edgar, sold by auction to-day, realised 3|d to 4d per foot, all faults. In tho corn market there is a good demand for wheat at 6s Gd to 7s, but there is none ottering ; flour is very firm at £18, at which figure there have been some transactions.

August 19. Messrs Dunn, Cheriton, Rogers, and West, are spoken of as candidates for the Mount Ba-'kcv district.

Almando Silver Mine shares have been sold at £25.

August 20. In the Legislative Assembly, the dobate on His Northern Territory resolutions is still going on, and as it is considered tantamount to a' want of confidence motion, it creates fi proportionate amount of interest.

Zealous efforts are being made to establish a Sailors' Hcme at" the Port. The subscription lists shows that already good names have been set down for the sum of £2300, and to supplemenfr-ihis amount a subsidy has been promised by the Government. The committee expect before long to be able to make a commencement with the building. The new reservoir for Uio water supply of Adelaide is to be made capable of containing flO 1.000,000 gallons, and is to bo constructed at an estimated co;t of £75,000.
