Rain Mars The Christmas Holidays In Wanganui District

Rain, which fell almost incessantly on Sunday and yesterday, marred the beginning o£ the Christmas holiday period in Wanganui and surrounding districts, but pleased the farming community and all gardeners.. Both Castlecliff and Kai Iwi beaches, which are usually thronged at this time of the season were deserted on the days mentioned. At the motor camps the population is much below the normal figure, but some of the visitors, having suffered two days of steady rain, decided still to “grin and bear it.” Cards, books and radio sets were freely used to spend the time. The taxi drivers have benefited from the wet weather and also the railway strike and they have not had a "let-up" since Friday night, and they were still going in the small hours of Saturday morning. Because of the railway strike, taxis lost patronage to the railway station, which is heavy at this period, but other trips were ordered which normally would have been done by rail.
