IF STRIKE CONTINUES WANGANUI WILL HAVE ONLY WORKING RAILWAY

If no settlement of the Government railwaymen’s strike is reached today and the dispute does not spread, Wanaanui wil. have the only rail traffic in New Zealand on Wednesday. This will be traffic operated by the Castlecliff Railway Company to handle coal discharged from the Anchor shipping Company’s collie'- I" urir '- At present berthed at Castlecliff, the Puriri is scheduled to begin discharge of 1000 tons of Greymouth coal on Wednesday morning. Earmarked for the Wanganui Gasworks this coal will be loaded in the Castlecliff company's waggons and railed straight to the works. This can be done without the waggons entering the Government railway yards. Discharge of the Gale, at present at the Town Wharf with a load of general cargo from Timaru, may prove a more thorny problem. Cargo unloaded at the Town Wharf passes through the Railway Departments wharf shed in which the key-men are at present on strike. The Secretary of the Wanganui Watersiders' Union. Mr W. G. Up'on, stated last night that his union had not met to consider any action on the discharge of either ship. Work was due to resume on the wharves on Wednesday, he said.
