Sports Association

WAVERLEY, Last Night (o.o— the annual general meeting of the Waverley Sports Association, held recently, Mr. A. M. Elmslie was elected patron, Mr. W. F. Alexander president and Messrs. David and Thomas Lupton vice-presidents. The balancesheet showed the finances of the association to be in a sound position and indicated that the sports meeting held each year fill a want in the district. The chief stewards • elected for the coming year are:—Horses, Mr D. Lupton; ponies, Mr. R. E. Lennox; fruit and- vegetables, Mr. J. C. Barrow; flowers, Miss H. C. Elmslie; national dancing, Mr. E. J. Kelly; schools, Mr. L. M. Fairbrother; gates, Mr. W. Potts; broadcasting, Mr. G. Watkins. The programme will be finalised at the next meeting. It was resolved that the association sponsor a country queen for the queen carnival to be held to raise funds for the grandstand at the Domain and a committee is to be formed to further this effort. The date for the sports for 1951 was fixed for Saturday March 31. Defence Rifle Club. At the fortnightly shoot of the Waverley-Waitotara Defence Rifle Club held during the week-end, one possible of 35 was scored by G. Webster. There was a moderate wind from the south, and the light conditions were excellent for shooting. The following are the scores recorded at the 200-yard and 300-yard mounds (35 and 50):—G. Webster 35, 47; H. Wilson 34, 46; L. Loveridge 33, 46; W. Andrews 30, 44; A. Loveridge 25, 44; W. Trudgeon 33. 42; L. Hooper 32. 40; P. Bradley 31, 38; W. Stewart 30, 39; E. Gower 33, 37; D. Robertson 25, 37. Labour Euchre Evening. Another successful euchre evening was held recently in the supper-room when 60 enthusiastic card players participated. The winners for the evening were:—Ladies: Mrs. D. Mc•Gorrey and Miss B. Barnett (equal) 1. Men: J. Bourge and M. Crane (equal) 1. The aggregate winners of the series were as follows:—Ladies: Mrs. W. Lynskey 1, Mrs. C. Christensen 2. Men: Mr. C. Christensen 1, Mr. A. Loveridge 2.

St. Andrew’s Sunday School. A short concert and film evening brought the Sunday School year to a close. Mr J. H. Dunford, as guest for the evening, presented the prizes. Particular mention was made of four children who had gained the Taranaki Presbytery certificates in the recent Sunday School examinations. Mr T. R. Wall stated that this was very creditable as only six had been issued in the whole of the Taranaki province. Those awarded were: Ruth Slee (94 and 100 per cent.), John Slee, Janet Dunford and Malcolm Wall. An opportunity was taken during the evening to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Dunford and family, who are leaving the district. Mr T. R. Wall spoke of the help Mr Dunford had been to the church, in every way, during the 51 years he had been in Waverley. Mr D. Chamberlain, on behalf of the church, made a presentation of a leather suitcase to Mr Dunford and extended the best wishes to Mr and Mrs Dunford in their future home. Farewell.

At the annual Primary School break-up, Mrs R. D. Wybourne, on behalf of the Boy Scouts’ Association, made a presentation to Mr J. I’-. Dunford on his departure from the district. Mr Dunford had been secretary and had been a tower of strength to the association during his term as postmaster in Waverley. Mr Dunford replied, stating he had enjoyed his association with the Scout movement and hoped he had been of help to the Scouts.
