A BIG AREA at Waiouru Camp known to the troops as “Rotten Row" holds 500 old tanks, parked in rows, that are just rusting away. At an average of £l0,000 each, they represent at least £5,000,000. The majority are the U.S.-made General Stewart, an exceptionally fast lank fitted with an aircraft motor and mounting a 37 mm gun. Others are British Valentines. This slow tank, armed with a twopounder grin, was designed for infantry support work. Most of the tanks are well painted, but maintenance is a huge problem. The guns and part of the turrets are covered with canvas. Some day a few of the 500 may be used for training purposes.
