Aircraft Drops Spare Parts On Lonely Island For Public Works Dept.
AUCKLAND, Last Night (P.A.).— An R.N.Z.A.F. Dakota from No 41 Transport Squadron, Whenuapai, did a good deed for members of the Public Works Department on isolated Raoul Island by dropping spare diesel parts in the course of a training flight today. Raoul Island, which is about 600 miles north-east of New Zealand, is used by the squadron as a landmark for periodical cross-country flights designed to give members training in navigation. Newspapers, for dropping on the island, are usually carried and knowing this the Public Works Department made a special request for the parts to be dropped, heavily wrapped in sacking. The equipment was dropped during low-level runs over the island.
