SERVICE MAY BE IN OPERATION BY JUNE NEXT YEAR
CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night (PA) —By June next year Tasman Empire Airways Ltd. expects to be operating a weekly return service between, Christchurch and Melbourne. After the board of directors of the company had held a meeting in Christchurch today, the chairman (Sir Leonard Isitt) announced that as soon as the authorities concerned in both New Zealand and Australia could give final information that the Christchurch and Essendon airports would be open to receive regularly-scheduled aircraft, the service between Christchurch and Melbourne would start. Information at present indicated that the service should start in June, 1951. In the first instance the aircraft would be chartered from Australian sources, the type depending on the availability of aircraft at the time of the commencement of the service. “At the start a weekly return service will be operated, but the frequency will be regulated to meet the public demand.
