INAUGURAL FLIGHT BETWEEN MELBOURNE AND CHRISTCHURCH
CHRISTCHURCH, Yesterday (PA). The first direct commercial passenger flight between Xe international airports in Christchurch and Melbourne will take place tomorrow morning when the DC6 airliner now at Harewood will take off for Melbourne. Passengers will include the Australian Minister for Air, Mr T. W. White, British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines officials, and newspaper representatives. This is an occasion in the history of air travel between New Zealand and Australia. ’ The Australian Minister announced that as soon as the airports in Christchurch and Melbourne were ready a service would be inaugurated between them. If the Minister’s prophecy is anything to go by, that will be in about six months. The airliner is expected to complete the flight in approximately 5i hours, which is less time than for the’ scheduled flight between Auckland and and Sydney with the present fly-ing-boat service. The DC6 will be under charter to Tasman Empire Airways Ltd.
