AMERICAN ATHLETES FOR CANTERBURY CENTENNIAL GAMES

AUCKLAND, Last Night (PA).Headed by the Olympic 800 metres recoiu holder, Mai Whitfield, who was recalled from service with the United States Army Air Force in Korea to join the party, a team of American athletes end oarsmen for the Canterbury Centennial Games arrived in Auckland by air this evening. A further team of swimmers »s due to arrive at Auckland oh Friday. A notable absentee from the track and field team was the holder of the world record for the 120yds hurdles, R. Attlesey. It was reported that he had not recovered from muscle and ‘enfion injuries suffered during a recent tour of Scandinavia with an American team, and in consequence had had to yield his place to J. Gehrdes. Attlesey was most disappointed at missing the trip, said members of the party. The two parties to arrive tonight were:—Athletes: M. Whitfield (400 and 880yds), J. Gehrdes (120yds hurdles), A. Bragg (sprints), D. Halderman (440yds hurdles), J. Twomey (one mile), W. Stauffer (three miles), Mr L. Windargte (coach); oarsmen: Mr K. Y. Ebright (coach), G. Loorz. W. Hull, P. Henriksen, T. Gew, K. Cusick, D. Draves, H. Gardiner, W. Durland, T. Adams. The oarsmen are all members of the University of California, the crew of which represented the United States at the Olympic Games in London two years ago.
