PRESENTATION TO SIR ERNEST ANDREWS

CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night (PA). —A presentation of a cheque for £5OO, made up of contributions by the citizens of Christchurch, was made to Sir Ernest Andrews by the Prime Minister on behalf of the people of the city this evening. Sir Ernest Andrews, who is now 78 years old, recently retired from the mayoralty of Christchurch after being in office for nine and a-half years. He had a distinguished record of local body administration in Christchurch extending over a period of more than 40 years, including 32 years on the Christchurch City Council as councillor and Mayor. Mrs Hardy Cookson, his daughter, who was mayoress for several years during Sir Ernest Andrews' term of office, was presented with a set of cutlery by Lady Wigram, president of the Red Cross Society of New Zealand, and herself a former Mayoress of Christchurch.
