MAORI SQUATTERS AT AUCKLAND ARE TO LEAVE THE AREA
AUCKLAND, Last Night (PA).—A number of Maoris who have been “squatting" at Orakei have been ordered to leave this area by Mr J. W. Kealy. S M Action was taken against eight Maoris by the Crown Lands Department under Section 25 of the Land Act alleging that the defendants were in occupation without right, title or licence. Mr Graham Speight, who prosecuted for the Crown Lands Department, said the cases were brought to remove Maori squatters of whom there were about 10 occupying six shanties made of packing cases and insulation paper, and in one case, a tent. It was destree to clear up this area. The Maoris who were there were not living in the pa proper. They had pitched their shanties on the roadside, and along near the sewage pumping house. The Government proposed to clear the whole of this area because it was entirely unsuitable for housing on account of its low-lying nature. It was really on the sea level.
