Motorists “Under The Weather" May Be Driven Home By The Police
LONDON, Dec 18.—The Chief Constable of Durban, South Africa, has invited motorists who have “one over the eight” it Christmas and New Year to telephone for a policeman to drive them home. There will be no arrests and no questions asked. The chief constable said: “Many drivers drink a bit Io much at parlies. When they drive home they are a ' danger to themselves and to the pub- • lie. It is better to admit one's judg--1 ment has been impaired than to try I to drive home and risk facing a magis- 1 I trate and imprisonment.” I Motorists’ only criticism of Ihe ! scheme was: “What will the neigh- • hours think if they see drivers being i pilo'ed home in their own car by ' policemen?" I So the chief constable has promised ■ that the drivers would wear plainj clothes.
