MORE HUMANE METHOD OF EXECUTION URGED BY MEMBER OF HOUSE
PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Last Night (PA).—During the debate in the Committee stages on the Capital Punishment Bill Mr Semple (Opp., Miramar) suggested that if capital punishment is re-introduced the Government devise a more humane way of execution than hanging. The Attorney-General (Mr. Webb) said he did not think it right that a bell should be tolled on the day of an execution. That merely pandered to public sensationalism. He did not think it right at all and that was one matter that would be looked into. Mr. Webb said the Government would consider a more humane method of execution if one could be devised. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr. Bodkin) said he favoured the most humane method of execution possible. He was satisfied something better than hanging could be devised —perhaps a lethal chamber In which gas would automatically be turned on by electrical apparatus which would remove the human element entirely.
