SOVIET PROTEST AT RELEASE OF A JAP WAR CRIMINAL

LONDON, Nov 30 (Recd 8 pm).— Russia has protested to the United States against the proposed release from prison of the former Japanese Foreign Minister (Mamoru Shigemitsu).

The Tass News Agency reported today that the Russian Note handed to the State Department, Washington, said: “Shigemitsu is one of the chief war criminals who was active in unleashing the aggressive war by the Japanese militarists.” General MacArthur’s headquarters on November 8 announced that Shingemitsu would be released on November 21 before his prison term expired. He was sentenced to seven years’ gaol in November, 1948, by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East. The tribunal included representatives of Russia, the United States, Britain, Australia and New Zealand.

According to Tass, the Note said: “It is known that neither in the charter of the International Military Tribunal nor in the decision of the Far Eastern Commission of April, 1946, are there provisions for paroling major Japanese war criminals after sentence.

Russia held General MacArthur responsible for this “illegal” action. Copies of the Note have been sent to all members of the Far East Commission.
