BATSMAN DIES WHEN STRUCK BY BALL IN BALCLUTHA CRICKET

DUNEDIN, Last Night (PA) —After being struck just above the heart by a cricket ball during a match at Balclutha on Saturday afternoon, James Leslie Mason, 26, of North Balclutha, collapsed and died within a few minutes.

Mason was receiving his second ball in an A grade match between Balclutha and Clinton. The ball was a full toss one, but not unduly high oc fast. It was sent down by F. Williams, who was bowling for Clinton. The incident occurred about 3.45 p.m. An inquest was opened on Saturday night before the district coroner, Mr J. R. Copeland, and evidence of identification was given by Mr C. E. Mason. The inquest was adjourned sine die.
