WANGANUI SWIMMING CENTRE STARTS NEW SEASON “IN THE RED”

Receiving comparatively little public support for its fixtures last season, the Wanganui Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association had only £l4 in the bank at the end of the season—and debts of some £27 to be settled during the coming season. These debts comprised the repayment of a loan of £lO from the Waverley Swimming Club and the payment of almost £l7 in outstanding affiliation fees to the Dominion body. The centre’s only assets are a typewriter and a number of trophies. However, many of these trophies cannot be traced. This was revealed in discussion on the statement of receipts and expenditure presented at the centre’s annual meeting last night. A new scale for club affiliation fees will come into effect in the centre this season. This is expected to increase income by about £2O, but, stated the annual report, even this would not be adequate to meet the position. “Public subscription and support for championships and other functions appear to be necessary, and should be actively and continuously sought during the coming season,’’ stated the report. The statement of accounts showed that club affiliation fees last season totalled £23. Takings from the district trials and the championships, each of which was held over two days, together brought in £46. Fourteen pounds was levied from the clubs and the Waverley Club gave a loan of £lO. Major expenditure was the payment ol two years' honorarium to the secretary, one year of which had been held over because of previous lack of finance. Travelling to the New Zealand championships cost £ll. Baths hire for the district trials and the championships totalled £5. A sub-committee comprising Messrs H. J. Calkin. N. L. Fletcher, W. D. Ayson and R. Thornley (treasurer) wa s set up to Investigate methods of improving the centre’s finances. Also, to encourage public support cf swimming. the meeting passed a recommendation to clubs that a uniform minimum scale of admission to rarnivals be introduced. The minimums quoted wore 2s for adults and 6d for school children.
