LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS TO BE HELD IN 10 WEEKS’ TIME

In 10 weeks’ time residents of the iow n and country will exercise the.r votes in the choice of candidates who are to represent them on the various local bodies for the next three years. The municipal and local body elections are set down for Saturday, November 18. In Marton borough, polls will be held for the office of mayor, eight councillors, one representative each o n the Rangitikei Catchment Board, the Wanganui - Rangitikei Electric Power Board and the Wanganui Hospital Board, the latter representing the Marton and Taihape boroughs. Rangitikei County ratepayers will have to elect 10 councillors, three representatives On the Catchment Board, one on the Power Board and three representatives on the Hospital Board. The Marton Borough district electors’ list has closed and further additions will have to be made on the supplementary roll, whimh will close 28 days before the election. All residents in the borough who have reached the age of 21 years and have been a resident of the borough for at least three months, are entitled to vote at the municinal elections. A slightly different qualification Is made in the status of a county voter. The ordinary ratepayer is entitled to one vote up to £lOOO rateable value o f his property, two votes up to £2OOO. and three votes if the rateable value of his pronertv is over £2OOO. AU residents of the county who are not ratepavers are allowed one vote County ratepayers when they go tc the noils in November will also vote on the £50.000 bridge loan. Residents of the county who are not ratepayers, however, will not vote on the loan proposal. LADIES’ GOLF DRAW A bogey match will be played on the Marton links next Saturday and Tuesday. Judging by the traffic tally taken at two points near Marton, the number of vehicles on district roads has increased considerably over the past 13 years. The tally was part of a Do-minion-wide Main Highways Board check. Considerable increase in the volume of traffic was noted at the junction of the Crofton Road-Makirikiri Road. Ar. this intersection, traffic was checked as it went on the Marton side of Crofton. on the Curl's Bridge leg of the road, east along Makirikiri Read and west along Makirikiri Rond. The average daily traffic was 486.6 vehicles north (toward Marton), 347.3 south (toward Curl's Bridge), 110.6 east, and 58.6 west. These figures represented an increase on the 1937 tally of 74 per cent, north, 83 per cent, south, and 8.5 per cent., while the east bound South Makirikiri Road traffic registered a decrease of 8 per cent. On the corner of Jefferson’s Line and Tutaenui Road, the average daily tally was 168.9 south (toward Marton), 80.1 north (toward Tutaenui), 108 east (Jefferson’s Line) and 46.4 west (Fern Flats). A tally was not | taken at this point in 1937. but ac- I cording to 1937 figures for the nearby j Norwood corner, on the State highway, the tally is about 6.8 per cent, below 1937 figures.
