Rangitikei Branch Of National Party Holds Special Meeting

Reports on matters discussed at the recent annual conference of the National Party at Christchurch were discussed at a special meeting of the Rangitikei branch at Feilding this week. The speakers were Miss Beckett (Marton), Mr. J. Caithness, chairman of the Rangitikei committee, Mi. E. B. Gordon, M.P., and Mr. A. R. Gibson, chairman of the Feilding branch. Mr. Caithness presided. , Mr. Caithness explained that a similar meeting had -been held in Marton. Through officials and executive members of the party, it was intended to keep members posted regarding developments of a national character and to give a report of the Government's work as it proceeded and to discuss matters of general interest. The difficulties experienced by tradesmen in securing apprentices were discussed. It was stated that all trades were faced with the problem of completing articles of apprenticeship because so many youths with a natural aptitude for the trades and who showed promise of developing into skilled tradesmen, did not have the required educational standard of two years’ secondary school and | school certificate. Mr. Gordon pro- [ mised to see if anything could be done about the matter. TENANCIES Dealing with the Tenancy Act, Mr. Gordon stated that in cases where a tenant had been informed that the dwelling which he had been renting had been sold, the new owner still had to find alternative accommodation. A year's notice to quit had to be given where the owner had owned the property for two years and six months' notice where the property had been owned for three years or more. Respecting new tenancies, a con tract was required to be entered into and the owner or the tenant could then give notice in accordance with the terms of the contract. If the contract provided for three months’ notice on either side then possession would have to be given at its expiration or before- In the case of new tenants, alternative accommodation did not have to be provided. REPORTS RECEIVED Miss Beckett gave a full report on the annual conference at Christchurch where 350 delegates took part in the discussions. The National Party would honour its promise to reduce the cost of living but had not promised to do so in six months. The organisation of the National Party was excellent and in the years to come the results of the turning point in the history of New Zealand when the National Government took office would become apparent. Messrs. Caithness and Gibson stressed the need for continued loyalty and tolerance. The Government was new in office and everything desirable could not be achieved immediately. The country had been saved from Socialism and would eventually be put in a sound financial and economic condition.
