Four Million Tons Of Coal At Least In New Seam At Huntly

AUCKLAND, Yesterday (P.A.).— The first coal from the vast new Huntly coal seam should be won in about 15 months, said the Undersecretary for Mines, Mr. C. H. Benney. in Auckland today. Work on the new seam with open cast methods would probably start in about a year, Mr. Benney said. The seam would be a thoroughly economical proposition. It covered about 150 acres and averaged about 30 feet in thickness. When in full production thn mine would employ about 40 men and produce 600 tons of coal daily. Mr. Benney added that an estimate of four million tons of coal in the seam was conservative. The quality of the coal fully equalled the Waikato standards.
