MACARTHUR URGED TO DROP POLITICS

LONDON. Aug. 31 (Recd. 6 p.m.)— The “Daily Mirror’s” Washington correspondent says the British Government has informed the United States Government that it strongly disapproves of the issue of tactless statements by General MacArthur. The British representations stress, says the correspoident, that MacArthur is not commanding American troops alone but United Nations forces.

The general feeling at Lake Success, adds the correspondent, is that MacArthur should cease meddling in international diplomacy. The General’s views on Formosa, as expressed in a statement which President Truman instructed him to withdraw, are likely to have particular repercussions upon Indian public opinion, which has already strong suspicions of American policy in the Far East.
