WANGANUI SOCCER TEAM RETAINS THE BROWN SHIELD

Defeating Taranaki by 8 goals to nil the Wanganui soccer representative team retained the Brown Shield in a match played on Cook's Gardens, Wanganui, on Saturday. The winners registered four goals in the first hall and a similar number in the second. The visitors lacked the co-ordina tion and positional play of the Shield holders and at no stage of the game did they look a serious threat to the Wanganui team. The combined efforts of the backs and forwards of Wanganui were a constant menace to Taranaki, who had no counter to the home s'de’s purposeful attacks. The Wanganui halves, Breed, Kendrick and Hessell, played effectively, with Breed' playing one of his best games this season. The whole forward line went well and made several penetrating movements which often had Taranaki in a tangle. The Kidd brothers, with Mutimer, Scott and Wellwood, were often in the picture with deft moves. Patterson and Springer made the most of their onnortunities, and the goalie, Gould, did not have a strenuous day. Th? two best nlayers for Taranaki were Thomnson, the goalie, and J. Shaw, the right wing. The game opened' on a buoyant note for Wanganui for J. Kidd found th P Taranaki net with a powerful long shot after 45 seconds’ nlav. With the score against them 1-nil.
