Brookby Song Schoolgirl's Pet Hunter

HASTINGS, Last. Night (PA).—The! former champion steeplechaser i Brookby Song, who was retired from . racing on the eve of the recent Wei- 1 lington winter race meeting, has been presented by his owner, Mr H. Whitford, 1o Miss Lucy Douglas, 13-year-old daughter of tie president, of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, Mr D. M. Douglas, for use as a hunter. At the end of his hunting days Brookby Song will probably return 'to the property of his former owner, near Te Awamutu. Mr Whitford had not met Mr Doug- ’ las until the Hawke’s Bay winter meeting a few weeks ago, when he learned of Lucy’s keenness on hunting and her love of horses. Knowing , that Brookby Song would have a good home and feeling that the old champion would be happier in 'the hunting field than in the retirement paddock, he made a gift of him to Lucy Doug- ! las. Brookby Song in 1948 emulated the feats of Coalition and Beau Cavalier in winning the triple crown, the Great Northern, Wellington and Grand Na- i tional Steeplechase events. In six seasons he amassed in stakes £17,000, ' an Australian and New Zealand record for a steeplechaser Brookby Song, contested 33 races’ for 12 wins and eight minor placing*. , He was a double winner of the Great Northern Steeplechase, having won ’ also in 1947. His other successes In- ; eluded the Pakuranga- Hunt Cup, Wai- • kato Hunt Cup, Waikato Steeplechase, A.R.C.
