GUN BATTLE WITH BANDIT AFTER A BANK ROBBERY

NEW YORK, June 15 (Recd. 6pm)— Federal Bureau of Investigation agents fought a gun battle with a young bandit armed with a sub-machine-gun in Portland, Oregon, today They wounded and captured the bandit, Wayne Long, aged 26, after three bullets from Long's sub-machine gun had wounded one agent. The battle took place as Long ran from a bank with 10,000 dollars he had just stolen. Agents had been watching Long since he was freed from Oregon State prison yesterday, in the belief that he would attempt an early crime. Long drove to the bank in a truck, but the agents thought he was going there on legitimate business. When he got Inside, however, he took a sub-machinegun from a shopping bag, fired several shots into the celling and forced the terrified tank employees to hand over money. The agents heard the shots and were running to the bank whjn Long emerged and opened fire.
