DOUBLE PRISON TERM FOR BREACHES OF OFFICIAL SECRETS ACT

OTTAWA, June 15 (Recd. 8 pm).— The Canadian Government announced today that it proposed to double the prison term for violations of the Official Secrets Act. Mr. Stuart Garson, Minister of Justice, introduced a bill into the House of Commons to increase the maximum sentence under the Act from seven to 14 years. Mr. Garson also introduced other amendments to the Act. The most significant of these would give an extra-territorial effect, so that the Government would be able to punish Canadians who broke the law outside Canada and foreigners who unlawfully divulged, outside Canada, secret information which they gathered in the country.

The Canadian Press said the Bill offered the basis for a major debate on anti-espionage activities, and this probably would occur when the Bill came up for its second reading.
