Children Permitted To Leave School Early For Music Lessons

School headmasters have authority to allow children to leave school an hour earlier than usual provided they have attended school for four hours on that day, if they wish to attend music lessons, but the Wanganui Education Board is recommending to teachers that such permission should be granted only where there is no resident teacher. A memorandum from the Education Department received at yesterday’s meeting of the board stated that the Minister of Education (Mr. Algie) wanted this practice to continue and that conditions under which children may be permitted to leave school early will be published in the Education Gazette. Mr. F. C. Jannings (a retired headmaster) said the board could safely leave the matter to the discretion of the teachers. No teacher would allow any child to be absent from school without good cause. The secretary (Mr. G. N. Boulton) suggested that the resolution adopted at the April meeting approving of children being allowed an hour off to attend music clases when there was no resident teacher should go out to schools in the form of a recommendation. This action was agreed to.
