Reply To Mr. Nash As To Butter Exports To British Market

WELLINGTON, Last Night (P.A.) —Commenting on Mr. Nash’s statement that if Britain removed the subsidy from butter the market for New Zealand butter would collapse, Mr. Holyoake, Minister of Agriculture and Marketing, stated that when the price of butter was recently increased in the United Kingdom by 4d a lb and the ration increased to 50z., the Minister of Food stated that ‘9 per cent, of the extra allowance was lifted while the whole of the margarine ration was not.

“It has been stated by a responsible British authority that at from 2s 3d to 2s 6d a lb.. Britain could absorb 350,000 tons of butter a year, and on their present imports it looks as if it would take two or four years to reach that quantity,” concluded Mr. Holyoake.
