RECORD ATTENDANCE AT ANNUAL MEETING JUNIOR NATIONAL PARTY

Mr. D. J. Howard presented the annual report on the past year's activities to a record attendance of members at the annual genera] meeting of the Marton branch of the Junior National Party. In extending a welcome to the president of the women’s section (Miss C. M. Beckett), and the electorate secretary (Mr. M. McConachie), Mr. Howard expressed appreciation of the coopration and encouragement given to the junior section by the senior branch. In replying Mr. McConachie thanked the junior members for their help during the election campaign and throughout the year. Officers elected were: President, Mr Douglas Howard; vice-president, Mr. Stuart McManaway; secretary, Miss D. Kimpton; treasurer, Miss J. Paterson newsletter reporter, Mr. Derek Howard; committee, Messrs. B. Gordon, W. B. Gray, W. K. Williams, R. Ingle, T. Sutcliffe, B. McCully, Derek Howard and Misses A. McFarlane, J. Scoon and L- Crabb; delegates to Rangitikei electorate, Misses Kimpton, Paterson, Messrs. D. Howard, McManaway, G. E. Gordon and I. Barton. Members wishing to take part in the organised trip up the Wanganui River on April 1 are askeij to contact the secretary immediately. GOLF CLUB OPENING. The first of the winter sporting organisations to get under way is the Marton Golf Club, whose official opening day will take place tomorrow. A mixed Canadian foursome bogey competition has been arranged and play will commence at 12.30 p.m. Players taking part are to arrange their own partners, but anyone requiring partners is advised to contact the secretary and these will be arranged where possible. The club has extended a cordial invitation to all golfers of neighbouring clubs to participate in the afternoon’s competitions. SOCIAL EVENING In -honour of Miss Fay Thompson, whose marriage takes place shortly, and Mrs. J. Mason, who is leaving New Zealand for Australia early next month as a member of the New Zealand marching team, a combined kitchen evening and farewell social was held recently in the Marton Parish Hall by the Marton Municipal Band marching team. Miss Thompson was the recipient of many useful gifts from her team mates and many friend?, and Mrs. Mason was presented with a travelling rug by the team. ONLY TWO CLUB CRICKET MATCHES TOMORROW. With Old Boys forfeiting to Sanson, only two club cricket matches will be played in Rangitikei tomorrow, and both are set down for decision on the Marton ground. Fixtures are: Marton v Suburbs at Marton (No 2 wicket); Porewa v High School at Marton (No. 1 wicket); Sanson win by default from Old Boys, Hunterville a bye. ♦ With the opening of the golf season to morrow, both the Marton and Porewa teams will not be at full strength and some surprise results may be the order of the day. Teams to hand are: Porewa: R. S. Fullerton-Smith, W. B. Gray, M. Shahd, J. Langley, R. Parkinson, J. Dunford, R. Lourie, D. Stanford, R. Ingle, D. Bushby and N. Williams.
