In conjunction with the Marton District High School intre-house sports this week, th e infant department also held their annual sports meeting. PRESENTATION MADE TO MARATHON RUNNER. The need for concentrated training and stamina was stressed by Mr. Gordon Bromley, one of New Zealand’s representatives at the recent Empire Games in an address to Marton athletes on Tuesday night. Mr. Bromley, who ran in the marathon at the Games, said tliat it was only after years o’f running that he himself gained any success on the athletic held. Mr. Bromley’s address was listened to with great interest. He covered various parts of the routine at Ardmore, where he was in camp with all other competitors, training techniques used by other countries and he concluded his talk by telling his listeners some of the highlights of the Games. During the evening opportunity was taken to make a presentation to Mr. Bromley by the Marton Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club in recognition of his selection to represent New Zealand at the Empire fixture. In making the presentation, the mayor, Mr. T. E. Barton, stated he was expressing the feelings of all who were present when he showed appreciation of what Mr. Bromley had done for sport in the district. It was a pity that his health had not been up to his usual standard at the time of the Games, but nevertheless he iiad put up a good showing. Mr. Bromley, who has been prominently connected with athletics, especially harriers, in the Marton district for many years finished seventh at the Games. Three days before the marathon he was in bed at Ardmore with the ’flu and on the day of the big race he jvas far from fit. HARVEST FESTIVAL AT ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH The annual harvest festival makes a strong appeal, especially to a farming community and always meets with a gratifying response. From the earliest days the annual gathering in of the fruits of the earth has been a time of great rejoicing. In the harvest hymns, people find a vehicle for the expression of their graU.tude, while the display in the church of the produce donated helped to make the festival a n occasion of real thankfulness to God for His goodness. Harvest services will be held in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Marton, on Sunday at both 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., and all produce donated will be given to the Turakina Maori Girls' College, an institution which is doing a splendid work for the intellectual, moral and spiritual welfare of the young women of the Maori race. All are cordially invited to these services on Sunday and donatio:/, of produce will be welcome. A harvest service will also be held in the Marton Junction Presbyterian Church at 2.30 p.m. LAST RESPECTS PAID TO THE LATE MR. H. Y. CAMERON. Representatives from many organisations attended St. Stephen's Church (Marton) yesterday afternoon for the funeral service of the late Mr. H. Y. Cameron, a prominent Marto n businessman, whose death occurred on Tuesday night. Scores of wreaths paid eloquent tribute to the high place Mr. Cameron held in the respect of the Marton community. The short service at the church and at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. Nigel Williams. The pall-bearers were Messrs W. McCully, K. J. Coombe, A. Thompson (Marton). J. W. Ashwell (Palmerston North),' D. Kilgour and R. K. Kilgour (Kiwi tea). Among the at the funeral' were the Mayor (Mr. T. E. Barton) and the town clerk (Mr C. C. McDonald), the late M’ Cameron being a member of the Marton Borough Council from 1923 to 1931. Mr. A. C. M. Parkinson re ) :sented the Wanganui Justices of the Peace Association. The chief mourners were his wife, two sons, Mr. Reid Cameron (Dunedin) and Mr. Roger Cameron (Wanganui); one daughter, Miss Joellne Cameron (Wanganui), two sjsters. Mrs. Marshall (Wellington) and Mrs. Wilson (Trentham), and three brothers, Messrs H. Cameron (Christchurch), N. Cameron (Blenheim) and J. Cameron (Tauranga). trophies presented. Trophies won during the season were preseinted by the Mayor (Mr. T. E. Barton) at the social evening organised by the Marton Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, following the final sports meeting of the season last Tuesday night. The winners were:— Galpin Cup (seniors), D. Robertson, 10 points; Simpson Cup juniors), R. Goebel, 11 points; Archibald Cup (women), Iris Martyn, 24 points; Sutcliffe Cup (field events), F. Foote, 9 points; Bellve Rose Bowl (cycling), A. Quittenden and R. Hausman, equal. 13 points; Stafford Cup (colts), B. Bennett, 13 points; Haddock Cup (girls), M. Martyn, 19 points. Special trophy for one mile cycle: A. Quittenden. MARTON TENNIS CLUB HOLDS SUCCESSFUL LADIES’ DAY. Under the management of the ladies’ captain, Miss N. Hutton and Mrs D. F. Gorrie, the Marton Lawn Tennis Club held a "ladies’ day" at the courts on Wednesday afternoon. The weather was perfect and all players had an enjoyable afternoon’s tennis. Trophies were donated by Mrs. R. S. Fullerton-Smith and the club, and the winners were Mrs. Ron Penn (playing ’as a man) with 105 points and Mrs. M. C. Fenwicke with 103 points. The official closing of the chib will be held tomorrow when a tournament will be played commencing at 9.30 a.m. The club has extended an invitation to all visitors and friends to take part in the tournament. Trophies won. during the season will be presented at noon. SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS. The Marton Swimming Baths are to close for the season tomorrow, according to an announcement made by the secretary of the local swimming club, Mr C. Hunt. The club has arranged a big afternoons programme for the final day with the club's championships commencing at 2 p.m. Ordinary swiming will be available between the hours of 4 and 6 n.m.
