DIFFICULT TASK TO KEEP LAW AND ORDER IN INDONESIA
LONDON, Dec. 13 (Recd. 6pm).— The “Times” Batavia correspondent says the question of whether the Indonesian Federal Cabinet will be able to maintain law and order when It takes over from the Dutch a fewweeks from now, is one of the main topics of discussion here, and is the source of a certain amount of anxiety.
Observers agree that after the transfer of power there may be a two-fold challenge to peace of Indonesia. The first danger is that irresponsible elements may try to use the opportunity for practices varying from looting to widespread violence and revenge murders. The second is that the stability of the new State may be threatened by the activities of the leftw-ing group. The latter danger is thought to be more serious in the long run than the first, which is the more immediate. Many non-Indonesians are fearful of what may happen, but Indonesian authorities express confidence that they will be able to handle the situation.
