DEMOCRAT VICTORIES IN ELECTIONS

NEW YORK, Nov. 9 (Recd. 11.25 p.m.)—The Democrats won a number of significant victories in elections throughout New York State yesterday. Herbert Lehman won the election to the United Senate after a bitter campaign against John Foster Dulles (Republican) in the most important of the elections. Mrs. Edna Kelly (Democrat) won a by-election in Brooklyn for the House of Representatives. The by-election was necessary because of the death of Representative Andrew Somers (Democrat). William O’Dwyer (Democrat) was re-elected Mayor of New York City in a contest against Newbold Morris (Republican-Liberal Fusian Parties) and Vito Marcantonio (American Labour Party). In local elections in Northern New York State Democrats defeated Republican mayors in eight cities. The campaign between Lehman and Dulles was fought largely over President Truman’s domestic policies. Lehman strongly supported Mr. Truman’s “Fair Deal” programme, and Dulles attacked it. Complete returns in New York City’s mayoralty election were:— O’Dwyer 1,264,000; Newbold Morris (Republican Liberal) 956,170; Vito Marcantino 356,423. Mr. Truman, who was addressing a National Women’s Democratic Club dinner in Washington, said he was exceedingly happy over the New York election results. He said they would have a decided effect on the 1950 elections (four House of Representatives and a third of the Senate). “It makes us assume much greater responsibility as the party of the people,’’ said Mr. Truman, who reaffirmed the Democratic Party’s determination to accomplish the aims set out in its 1948 platform. The Associated Press said the Senate election result was a decided setback for Governor Dewey, who appointed Dulles to the Senate in July when Senator Robert Wagner (Democrat) resigned. Observers believed Mr. Dewey planned to run for Governor again next year and perhaps contest the Presidency in 1952 if Dulles won the Senate seat. Democrats and Republicans both admitted during the campaign that the result would be a good indication of the people’s mood in the late more important larger elections. In other elections throughout the United States Democrats retained the governorship of Virginia, oused the Republicans from four city offices in Philadelphia, and had mayors elected in Boston, Pittsburg, Louisville, and Cleveland. The Democratic sweep extended California, where John Shelley, Prcisident of the State Federation of Labour, a Truman supporter, was elected to the National House of Representatives to fill the vacancy caused by the death of a Republican. The latest figures in the Senator contest in New York are: Lehman, 2,565,266; Dulles, 2,357,563.
