New Zealand Cup Trial At Levin Won By Bhutan; Deseado Takes Open Sprint

(Special Reporter)

Three-year-olds in Bhutan and The Laird secured the major placings in the New Zealand Cup Trial at the Levin Racing Club’s spring meeting on Saturday. The open sprint went to Deseado, who paid a surprisingly good price considering his forward display at Bulls a week earlier.

Most of the winners were well supported, His Lordship and Statesman being successful favourites and Jolly Sailor, Bhutan, Deseado and Recess, all winners, second favourites or thereabouts. Good dividends, in view of recent form, were returned by Playtos, Offender and The Rip, the latter paying over a score. The totalisator turnover was a healthy one, the total being £61,198 as against £59,997 10s last year, an increase of £l2OO 10s. There was a good attendance and the weather was fine, the track being fast. BHUTAN’S SOIJD WIN Finishing very solidly down the middle of the track, Bhutan won the New Zealand Gup Trial in most convincing style. He was a fair way back early, but made up some of his ground down the back and was within range of the leaders on the turn. Belle Anita and The Laird made most of the play and at the half-mile they led Wild Note. Imperial, Blue Seal, Bhutan and Avengei. The two last-named went up to behind the leaders working round lhe turn and followed The Laird into the straight. Bhutan immediately challenged and over the final half-furlong had the race won, to get there with half a length to spare. The Laird had some daylight on his side over Avenger, with Merry Robin fourth, followed by Solimbine, Wild ?Jcte, Blue Spec, Blue Seal and Belle Anita. Blank Cheque could not hold a handy position half a mile from home and was swamped. DESEADO COMFORTABLY Making no mistakes, Deseado, who had followed Destination into the straight in the McDonald Memorial, strode away and had a mere five lengths to spare at the finish. Air Belle, Destination and Deseado were the first in the picture, with His Nibs also there, but the first-named dropped back on the turn and His Nibs appeared to be struggling. Coming to the turn for home Deseado had Destination covered, and Sweet Spray entered into the fray. Though the Hawke’s Bay filly appeared to have a show as they swung, Deseado just left her standing. Two lengths further back was Destination, with Castlebrae, His Nibs and Barrage following. Sprinting out to the front four furlongs from home in the Champion Hack Handicap, The Rip increased his lead rounding the turn and from then on it was a procession. He won by a margin of daylight. Terrific, not well placed in the first part, got clear too late, but was a meritorious second under the circumstances. A burst of late speed brought Foxmorn with a late rush to head Sir Denzil out of third place. Night Royal was next, followed by Chief Officer and Brenloch, who was definitely unlucky. PLAYTOS REPEATS After allowing Red Herring to pace along with him for the first mile of the Highweight, Playtos ran into the lead and making the turn better than Result, who was forced out wide, went on to win by over a length. There was a great battle for third, with The Stormovik, Angell and Sergeant Jack in line, and that is how they were placed. THE MINOR EVENTS Lady Viv always had command in the first division of the Maiden, being attended early by Parker, Sad Sack and Talent. The leader drew away in the straight to win handsomely, while the judge was unable to split Talent and Sad Sack. High Note’s fourth was promising, for he came, from a long way back. After keeping Good Record company to the turn, His Lordship exercised his ranking and left the second division to it. He won with a deal in hand. A late run on the outside got Vain Girl second, she being three lengths ahead of Good Record. Paper Spy and Dabster were next. in the early part of the first division of the Weraroa Handicap there was some changing and chopping, but when they had settled down Statesman was up on the outside of Clever Boy and Fighting Fox, with Princess Diane heading tne others. Once in line Statesman had to be kept going to guard against ihs tendency to loaf and he won by two lengths. Princess Diane finished over Clever Boy for second with Laucaia Boy fourth. Then came Action and Fighting Fox. To the turn in the second division of the Weraroa Handicap Autocrat and Jolly Sailor made play for Omega and Conceal, but in the home stretch Jolly Sailor took his leave and won going away by two lengths. Omega ran Autocrat down on lhe post and Lady Shoanagh was fourth, ahead of High Tension and Conceal. They went across the line in the Mako Mako Handicap six abreast, with Offender just showing out. Finola, Offender, Lady Ella, Royal Briton and Infinity, w.tn Philemon also there, made them tramp early, with Super Duke well back. Finola headed for home first and then they stretched themselves across the course. Offender got the upper hand inside the furlong. For the remainder of the money there was a titanic battle with Tharariche, Super Duke, Philemon, Finola and Gleam ranged up. The judge split them in tnat order, with noses the separating margins. Jimmy Wilde and Recess won the respective divisions in the concluding event, the Hokio Huck Handicap. In the first division Pictagaiii and Bivouac lost a lot of ground at the start, and Donbino led Jimmy Wilde, Reflect, High Tension and Rival Star into the straight. Jimmy Wilde, at good odds, then ran on to win by a length and a-half, in a good battle for second place Vitesse, coming from a long way back, got. up to make a dead-heat of it. Next were High Tension, Palais Glide and Donbino. Recess jumped out smartly and led all the way in the second division. He was followed into the straight by Glenkindie, Lady Viv, Golden Robes and Airwyn, the latter pair having made up ground after dwelling at the start. Recess came on to win nicely bi' just under a lengtn from Glenkindie, who was two and a-half lengths in front of Golden Robes, with Gay John, Lady Viv, Lais and Airwyn next.
