Progress With Efforts To Clear Variegated Thistle In Rangitikei

MARTON, Last Night (CR).—Commeriting on inspections carried out of properties where variegated thistle was in evidence, the noxious weeds inspector, Mr J. Rjmnsun (Hunterville j, retorted at the meeting of the Rangitikei Count;/ Council yesterday that numerous fanners were having their properties sprayed, either by doing the work themselves or by contractor. “Three farmers in the Marton district have so far had their pastures sprayed to exterminate flat weeds with good results. Not only have 90 I per cent, of the weeds completely gone but a marked improvement is noted in the grasses, especially in respect to rye, which appears to have been heavily topdressed, ’ Mr Robinson added. “In the course ot inspections it is very noticeable that numerous farmers, especially on the land situated between the Turakina and Whangaehu Rivers, have made very little attempt to have their properties cleared of this weed, these properties in the main being held in large holdings. “In fairness to those farmers who are making a liberal attempt, to keep their properties clear of thistles, it is my intention to take legal proceedings against any of the above owners who have not cleared ail sections adjoining neighbouring properties either I;/ spraying or grubbing," the report stated
