DESIRE OF SOME OF PENANG’S POPULATION TOBE CROWN COLONY
LONDON, July 25 (Recd. 8 pm).— British, Chinese, Indian, Cingalese ana Eurasian leaders of Penang’s economic and political life are backing a demand that the island should secede from the Malayan Federation and become a Crown Colony again, says tne “Daily Express” Singapore correspondent. They declare, in a petition being ilown to the British Colonial Secretary, Mr. Creech-Jones: “Please let us strengthen our ties with the Empire and not weaken them.” British administrators admit Penang’s grievances. They say the sharp decline of the rich island’s trade and problems caused by centralised Government are the growing pains of a federation now 18 months old. They believe that a breakaway now would impair the Federation and a chance of self-governing Malaya in 25 years
