ORCHESTRA PROVIDES THE PROGRAMME AT SAVAGE CLUB “KORERO”

A high standard was set at the Wanganui Savage Club’s “korero” on Saturday night, when the members of the orchestra presented a varied programme. Savage W. Upton, a member of the orchestra, was installed as “Great Chief” by the “Rangatira,” Savage A. F. Newrick. Savage Upton kept the programme moving with a flow of humorous stories. A featured play was produced by Savage Roland Young: “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue She.” Those taking part were Savages J. Dent (female part), A. Peachey, W. Kilgour and L. Gillman (female part). A guest artist, Mr. W. Greig, was heard in three vocal solos —“Novana,” ‘‘Whispering Heaven” and “Duna." Savage W. J. Flyger sang two numbers with orchestral accompaniment, ‘‘Galway Bay” and “Phil the Fluter’s Ball.” A trombone quartette, was conducted by Savage R. Thomas—Messrs M. Thomas, B. Ingram, R. Cleveland and W. Austin. Their numbers were: Exerpts from “William Tell’’ and “Bohemian Girl.” Mr. N. Thomas also contributed trombone solos, “The Acrobat” and “Joy Wheel.” As usual, the club’s orchestra, which is such an asset to the presentation of club programmes, contributed four items: the “Bohemian Girl” overture, the marches “Vanishing Army” and “Sons of the Brave” and a waltz entitled “Thoughts.” The orchestra was under the baton of the club s musical director (Savage W. Bowra). A topical item was presented by Savage W. L. Fowler, which gave some insight to the characteristics and qualifications of the members of the orchestra. This was well received and was appropriate on such a night. A short sketch was staged by Savages Fowler, Miller and Palmer and another, “The Last Seven and Six,” was Savage s w. Bowra and L. Cleveland.

The Wanganui Hapu is to be “raided” on next “korebo” night by the Hawera Club, and a week later the Wanganui Sewage Club will “raid’’ Stratford. Savage Roland Young has begun his work of producing an original musical comedy for ladies’ night, entitled “We’ve Seen Them at the Corner in Wanganui by the Sea,*’ the music for which has been written by Savage E. O. Schnack. Rehearsals are «o start some time this week, when the task of casting the effort has been completed. That is to be discussed at a meeting this evening. An inward “raid” from the Masterton Club and two usual club nights, in addition to the Hawera “raid,” will intervene between now and ladies’ night, which will end the season
