PAST SEASON BEST IN HISTORY OF THE GONVILLE BOWLING CLUB
The past season was. one of the most successful in the history of the f club, said Mr. L. W. Chisholm, president of the Gonville Bowling Club at the annual meeting held on Wednesday night. There was an attendance of more than 50 members and enthusiasm was the key-note of the meeting, keen competition marking the election of officers. The report mentioned that it was most gratifying to kpow that the club still maintained its high standard of play and good fellowship, which could only be maintained in the future by the co-operation of all members. The season opened early in October, there being a large attendance of players and women supporters. The membership, which was limited to 90, was maintained throughout the season, and although on a few occasions nine rinks had to be provided for, the season was carried through comfortably, adds the report. The balance-sheet showed that the affairs of the club are in a sound position, but that very careful watching of expenditure is necessary. With, the continual rise in costs of materials and maintenance the committee had seriously considered the position and expressed the opinion that the ' time had come to review the annual • subscription. ’ * Reviewing the successes achieved : i by the club’s representatives at tour’'naments and competitions, the report : I stated that a rink composed of P. J., ’ R., and Leo Mailman and skipped by D. J. Armstrong won the Centre Christmas tournament- with their club-mates skipped by J. Healey as runners-up. In the champion of champion of play-off the club’s representative in the intermediate section, Don Corby, was successful in bringing honour to the club. It was a well-merited . win and he was to be heartily con- ■ I gratulated. I ■ After a tip on the day of the match ■ the club’s team won the senior shield ton the re-play. J. Glover also had a • well-deserved win in the centre open 'singles competition. The Keesing Cup was held by the ’ club at the opening of the season, . and the holders were successful in stalling off nine challenges to retain the trophy for the whole season. The • ' Hurn Cup was won early in the season and in this case 10 challenges I were disposed of so that this trophy i ' also goes forward for play on the, ' Gonville green next season.
