Time Limit May Be imposed On Parking In Broadway

Businessmen who are in the habit of parking their cars in Broadway, Marton, are to be advised that unless they acceded to the council's request to park their cars outside of Broadway the council will consider the possibility of enforcing a time limit for all cars. This decision was made at a meeting of the Marton Borough Council on Wednesday night following consideration of a report from the traffic inspector, Mr. W. C. Shaw, who staled that the appeal to buusinessmen to refrain from parking their cars in Broadway had not been adhered to, and as a result, double parking was on the increase. The problem of double parking could be eliminated with lhe co-operation of the businessmen, he said. With limited parking space available it was in the interests of the businessmen to leave this parking space for the motorist shopper. However, it. was to the contrary and this parking space was being taken up by the -businessmen. Double parking was on the increase and would continue unless action was taken against offenders, stated the inspector. This would have a detrimental effect on the shopkeepers’ turnover, as no motorist wished to have a court action taken against him. If this became necessary the motorist shopper would be inclined to shop in other towns. “It has not been my practice to prosecute for double parking. It is both distasteful to the motorist and myself,” said the inspector, “but if this further appeal does not bring about the result that I hope for, I can only enforce that regulation that governs this offence with the utmost vigour.”. “I must compliment the inspector on the moderate tone of his report,” commented the mayor. He said the matter should be brought to the notice of businessmen in the town. “If they don't keep their cars out of Broadway it is competent for the council to bring down a resolution limiting the time for parking,” added Mr. Barton. Cr. A. Grade: A letter should be spnt to all businessmen who are offending. I kept my car out of Broadway for six months but others would not co-operate so I went back. A motion, as stated above,' was moved by Cr. Gracie and carried. MARTON GOLF CLUB DRAW. The draw for tomorrow’s competition is as follows: N. Clarke, H. Coleman, A. D. Fullerton-Smith; M. A.
