Question Of The Installation Of Milk Bars In Civic Theatre

A petition, signed by 56 business men and ratepayers, requesting the council to rescind a previous resolution which permitted Kerridge-Odeon theatres Ltd., to establish two milk bars in the Marton Civic Theatre, when the extensive alterations and improvements' were carried out, was “received” on the motion of the Mayor, Mr. T. E. Barton, and seconded by Cr. E. C. Fogelberg, at a mooting of the Marton Borough Council on Wednesday night. The Mayor, in moving his motion and after referring to Standing Orders dealing with petitions to the council, indicated that councillors would have an opportunity of discussing the matter at their next ingThe petition was the result of a deputation from the Marton Milk Bar proprietors, who waited on the council at its last meeting, protesting at the council’s action in granting milk bar facilities to Kerridge-Odeon, Ltd. In moving that the petition be “received,” the Mayor pointed out that although 56 had signed the petition 136 business and professional men in Marton had not. Only one ratepayer outside of a businessman had signed the petition. Cr. K. H. Fowler: I don’t think it should be brushed over as lightly as that. You have an opinion Qf the business people. The Mayor: No. Cr. A. S. Blackledge: Well, 40 per cent. “I feel that if you had given an opportunity to the milk bar proprietors to tender for the right to run the Civic milk bars I think there would have been no outcry as at present,” said Cr. Fowler. In the meantime the petition was received. HUNTERVILLE AND RATA TO MEET TOMORROW Main Rugby attractions tomorrow in Rangitikei will be the meeting of Hunterville, winners of the senior competition last season, and Rata, who were runners-up. A.real dingdong go is expected at Hunterville, where the match will be played. Over the last few seasons these two teams, whenever they have met, have provided an excellent game. Rata will make a strong bid for victory.. They have a good solid team this yfear and their players include A. Duncan, the farmer Kaierau and Wanganui representative fullback. The Marton D.H. School team which ran up a cricket score against Bulls last week at Marton, will play Hunterville thirds (intermediate) in the curtain-raiser to this match.

Three games will again be played at Marton, the senior attraction being between Athletic and Rangatahi. This will be Rangatahi’s first match of the season, they having drawn the bye last week. As the visitors this season are strengthened by the addition of several players from Ratana, Athletic will have to show improved form on last week’s exhibition to emerge victorious. The curtain-raiser will be between the Athletic and Ratana juniors (open grade). On No. 2 ground, Marton Old Boys thirds will play Bui's thirds (intermediate section).

As Marton Old Boys senior and junior teams have a bye, a practice game has been arranged for them on No. 2 ground, commencing at 1.15 p.m., and all players in these grades have been asked to attend.
