WAITAKI BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL PUPIL WINS TRIP TO ENGLAND
INVERCARGILL, Last Night (PA). —An essay written by 17-year-oid Brian Woods, of Oreti, has earned him an air trip to England and a visit to that country lasting eight or nine weeks.
He was selected to represent the Waitaki Boys’ High School in an essay competition sponsored by the Overseas Mail, England, early in December. Yesterday, his parents received cable advice telling them of his success. The subject of the essay was “The World We Would Like to Live In.”
The competition is conducted in the United States, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, France, Holland, Belgium and Italy, as well as countries in the British Empire. Each of these countries is to have two representative students, a boy and a girl. The visitors will five as guests in British homes, attend British schools and gain the fullest possible knowledge of Britain and her institutions. They will teach, as well as learn, and will gather ideas from their colleagues and hosts to take back to their own countries.
It is understood all Brian Woods needs to take with him when he leaves in March will be luggage and £lO pocket money.
