New Australian Car Inspected By Chifley

MELBOURNE, Nov. 29 (Recd. 7.5 pm).—A new all-Australian car, the first inspection of which was attended this afternoon by Mr. Chifley, will sell at £675, plus £67 10s sales tax. It is a six-seater sedan of 21.6 rated horsepower, with three synchromesh gears, and is made in a converted wartime factory by General Mo-tors-Holdens Ltd. The car, which is known as the Holden, will be assembled in company plants, .which will employ 9000 Australians in five capital cities by next year. A production rate of 20,000 cars a year is expected to be reached by the second half of 1949.

Plans for the production of another Australian car, in which British and Australian capital would be involved, have been submitted to Mr. Chifley in Canberra by Mr. L. J. Martnett, formerly general manager of General Motors-Holdens.
