Move To Make “Santa Claus” A Shop Assistant Under An Award

MELBOURNE. Nov 28 (Reed 6 pm).—-Deciding that Father Christmas is too sacred to become a subject of litigation as to his status in trade, the Union of World Actors Equity has dropped out of the argument as to whether the white bearded old gentlemen is an actor or a shop assistant. The secretary of the Shop Assistants’ Union (Mr. A. M. Storey) wants Santa Claus to be trained for onerous duties and paid £7 12s a week, plus a penalty rate of £5 a week. “Arbitration would make a better man of him,” says Mr. Storey. “As a shop assistant, given advice by the union, selected foe ability and paid well, he would never betray tradition.” He added that there are cases of incompetent Father Christmases losing their beards or caps, or even wilting in the heat of the Australian summer. Streamlined Santas are not likely this Christmas, as the case will not be heard till early in January.
